Contemporary Art Museum

A historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing structure in Raleigh’s Depot Historic District (Warehouse District) was chosen for the location of the Contemporary Art Museum. The site was designated by NCDENR as a Brownfield site, and significant remedial work was necessary to transform the site into an occupiable and attractive destination for the public. The existing 20,000 sq. ft. building constructed with concrete, steel framing, and solid brick masonry bearing walls provided a strong background for a dramatic, contemporary entrance. Landscaping and final grading in the adjacent empty lot provide a large gathering space for community events and contributes to the overall sustainable practices implemented in the design.
